Supported Document Types and Sizes
Story Stream supports two document formats to accommodate your writing workflow. Our platform is designed to handle manuscripts of different sizes while maintaining accurate analysis.
Supported File Formats
Story Stream currently supports .docx
and .txt
files.
- Microsoft Word (.docx) - Recommended format
- Plain Text (.txt) - UTF-8 encoding recommended
File Preparation Tips
For the best results when uploading your manuscript:
- Use consistent formatting throughout your document
- Remove headers and footers that might interfere with analysis
- Include clear chapter markers to help our system understand your manuscript structure. I.e. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.
- Avoid special characters or excessive formatting that might not translate well
- Save a backup copy of your manuscript before uploading
Size Limitations
All plans—Blueprint, First Edition, and Masterpiece—support up to 500,000 tokens, which corresponds to approximately 400,000 words.
On top of this, due to hosting provider restrictions, each uploaded file size cannot exceed 5MB. This applies to both .txt
and .docx
formats. This can be difficult to navigate with word documents since they are often larger than 5MB. To work around this, you can convert your word document to a .txt
by following these steps.
- Open your word document
- Select "File" > "Save As"
- Choose a location to save your file
- Select "Plain text (.txt)" as the file type and save
- You will be prompted to select an encoding. Select "Unicode (UTF-8)" and save.
Note: Story Stream does not support reading images in word documents. If you have images in your word documents they will be ignored.
Troubleshooting Upload Issues
If you encounter problems uploading your manuscript:
- Ensure your file is under the maximum size limit
- Check that your document isn't password-protected
- Try saving in a different supported format
- Make sure your document doesn't contain embedded media that could cause issues
